Bringing Main Street to Grant Street

For many decades, we've let our neighborhood commercial districts decline at a disturbing rate. Despite evidence that shows our efforts to aid revitalization aren't working, as a city we've not shown the ability to deviate from tired and ineffective strategies and try something else. In many other communities, more than 1,200 of them to be exact, status quo has given way to new solutions, and the Main Street Approach to commercial district revitalization advanced by the National Trust for Historic Preservation has been adopted with great success.

In November 2007, we presented the idea of bringing the Main Street Approach to the Common Council's Committee for Community Development. Here's what we provided to the councilmembers. You can also download a copy in pdf format by clicking here.
